in the balance of the night
memories sharp as knives
the air is filled with cymbals
shucking off the past
blue light soft on horizons
translation into the other
the self and
the self observing the self
echoes of the Carolinian valley
and the unbound time that ran there
the willows maples oaks elms
footprints in mud
the moment of passing
the lie of remembrance
falling into meadows
grass fires in the summer
still heat
it’s not the same
it’s a different same
same as it could have been
a syrup world of thick light
eclipsing simple joy
a hidden life of delicate longing
the seer is the seen
all we have are things we remember
